Design Notes: Club Yu Mei x Standard Issue
Layering up, Yu Mei x Standard Issue knits are of the most cosy variety.
When the opportunity arose to collaborate with a respected local brand that upholds the same commitment to craftsmanship, quality and circularity as Yu Mei, we agreed wholeheartedly. The result is our first foray into knitwear with industry stalwart, Standard Issue.
Presenting the Club Yu Mei x Standard Issue Cashmere collection: a range of faithful favourites with the same uncompromising functionality inherent in each Yu Mei design.
Jessie and Adrian designed a three piece capsule collection comprised of a Sweater, a Vest and a Blanket Scarf in 100% cashmere. Inspired by the easy silhouette of a jersey Jessie wears year-round, the Sweater has a relaxed fit and wide ribbed cuffs that lend themselves to drape under coats, or be rolled up when washing dishes. This range was designed not only to be worn, but to be lived in.
The Vest is an extension of the Sweater. Its V-neck, sleeveless format allows for easy wearing under a fitted blazer. Layer the Vest over the Sweater for double the warmth. It looks equally stylish worn over a T-shirt or simply as-is - ideal for the crisp transition into spring or winter.
The Blanket Scarf is crafted from a lightweight 2ply cashmere yarn, allowing for effortless drape. This piece functions as both blanket and scarf, thanks to to its generous size.
Recognising that our leather goods are genderless, we intentionally sized the Cashmere collection in just two generous breaks. Size 1 will comfortably fit a women’s 8-14 or men’s S-L. Size 2 fits up to a women’s 18, or a men’s XL.
Standard Issue sources cashmere down that's grown responsibly in Mongolia. The fibres, from the Capra Hircus Laniger Goat, are then spun by the Carriagi family in Smirra, Italy before arriving in New Zealand to be knitted using Standard Issue’s impressive zero-waste technology.
We chose cashmere for its luxurious softness and lightness. Cashmere fibres are hollow and therefore lightweight, while also being up to 8 times warmer than wool. A long-term investment, quality cashmere pieces should last upwards of 20 years with proper care.
Cashmere is naturally odour repellent due to its ability to control moisture. Avoid over-washing as this will damage the natural fibres, and instead opt to air your knitwear in the bathroom where the steam will gently clean it. Hand-washing is recommended in cold water, with a gentle soap. Pilling is expected and can be removed with a cashmere comb.
