The Importance of Supporting the (Young) Arts: Jhana Millers

Jhana Millers of Jhana Millers Gallery

Art reflects culture and reflects histories—it contributes to who we are, and who we have been as people. The importance of arts’ role in society is well researched and well documented. Arts and culture are an important part of a thriving and engaging city—Wellington, after all, sells itself as the creative capital—and art is one of the major drivers of tourism worldwide. A wonderful aspect of my job is seeing how much joy art brings people, from those viewing it in the gallery and to those fortunate to live with it in their homes.

Supporting early career artists is a major focus for us at the gallery. Young artists are the successful artists of the future. It is incredibly difficult for young people today, and especially young artists, and we need to support them to continue to make work and pursue the arts as a sustainable profession. This support might be in the form of providing opportunities for them to show their work, sell their work, gain exhibition experience or explore their practice.

Visit a Yu Mei Lounge to explore some of the artworks that hang on our walls, often curated by Jhana herself, or keep an eye out for Club Yu Mei events in collaboration with young artists and get behind them to help cultivate creative industries in Aotearoa.
