Rather than styling a shoot in the traditional sense, I pulled looks from my own closet and shot from a slight distance, almost voyeuristically. Favouring gesture and motion, I wanted to capture the moments a normal photograph would edit out. The goal was for each frame to feel less like a fashion image than a still pulled from a longer, cinematic scene. The bag moves through it the way it would on any ordinary day, indifferent to the fact that it's being watched.

In a sense, this series is a work of self-portraiture. I'm not in front of the camera, but I'm not entirely absent from the frame either—I'm using another body to document a life and movements that I already know, to imagine what it looks like to be seen moving through the spaces where I spend time thinking and making my work.

The model is Dylan Pilar Shaw. She's newly back in California from the East Coast and pursuing modelling among other interests. This was our first time meeting and working together. She has a natural intelligence and an intuitive sense of movement that I found really refreshing; hopefully this was the first of many days making images together.

Garments and footwear: Mostly vintage—Max Mara, Calvin Klein, Miu Miu, Prada, Ann Demeulemeester—paired with some contemporary brands: Michelle Del Rio, Are Studio, and Kye Intimates (three dear friends), plus The Row and Lemaire. And a few I'll keep close to my chest!

Favorite bag: I’m finding it hard to choose between the Claudia Tote and the Pania. Claudia because I'm always struggling to find bags big enough to fit my computer and set-day necessities. Pania because my shoulders need a break from carrying around my computer and set-day necessities. But both are effortless, and I know they'll only get better with age.
