Behind the Bag 01 - Becca

Introducing the first in our series on the women Behind the Bag: the friends, family, muses and matriarchs whose needs have inspired the design of each Yu Mei style. Today we meet Becca Tock, the dear friend behind the Becca Bag and its more refined iteration, the new Rebecca Bag.

A native Wellingtonian, Becca is now based in Auckland after a move that saw her pursue her dream career managing Lonely’s three retail locations. However her path began on a different course with studies majoring in Molecular Biology and Ethics, before discovering her true passion in life - beautiful lingerie. “After some important people in my life supported me to make a change, I chose to follow a career path where I am lucky to be a part of womxn’s experiences, helping to empower them to feel confident and comfortable as they are, each and every day." Becca feels fortunate to work for such an incredible New Zealand brand with important values and we think it suits her perfectly.

Ever the epicurean, Becca says the way to her heart is a well curated platter paired with a Pétillant-naturel shared with friends on her sunny deck.

She has a penchant for collecting vintage postcards, found in out-of-the-way treasure troves amongst old coins and collectibles. Aside from the beautiful scenery featured on the front, it’s the hand-scrawled messages on the back she enjoys most. “They’re a reminder of a moment in time, a connection between friends, lovers or family; the relic of a moment long gone.” It seems fitting then, that her namesake bag is designed in an envelope style, as a safe place to keep love letters.

On her personal style, Becca admits “as a romantic I have always loved second hand shopping and the stories that preloved garments have to offer.” Regardless of the provenance, quality textiles are a key requirement in the pieces she sources. “I will never go past a bias cut silk dress and soft knit paired with a buttery leather bag and well-designed heel or sandal in leather or suede.”

With an eye for detail, Becca appreciates the brass lock clasp on the Rebecca style for its seamless ability to keep her possessions safe and her secrets tucked away. “As my style has become more refined, so too have my needs in a bag. The Rebecca is perfect to organise the contents of my wallet with the built-in card slots, allowing room for me to discreetly carry everything I could need in a day.” Despite all that it can contain, the Rebecca Bag maintains a sleek profile to compliment any outfit.

As for what she carries in a day, the contents of her Rebecca Bag are, predictably, curated for the life of a bonne vivante: “I never leave the house without at least two fragrances” with her current rotation comprising Le Labo’s Thé Noir 29 and Maison Louis Marie’s Kandilli. Completing her essentials are “a Moleskine, Artline 0.3mm and disposable camera - always on hand for when inspiration strikes.”

We adore Becca for her impeccable taste, radiant positivity, kind nature and steadfast friendship.
