Field Notes: Consumer Holidays

field notes

Consumer Holidays.

Every year around November, we at Yu Mei dread the consumer holiday that is “Black Friday, Cyber Monday”. I’ve got no idea when this tradition started but it doesn’t align with one of our core values: to support regenerative supply chains and promote conscious consumption.

You may have noticed that we don't go on sale. Our bags and small leather goods are crafted from premium materials that are built to last, hence their value does not diminish. In the past, our Archive Events have had the sole purpose of using all end of run materials and scraps to produce less waste, with funds recently going to incredible organisations like the Wellington City Mission. So there will be no special offer or sale from us on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Instead, we've put together an edit of our favourite black styles for the party season upon us and beyond.

Just as modern life demands an arsenal of tools, the festive season requires a wardrobe of party looks. In the spirit of consuming responsibly, we're encouraging you to shop from your wardrobe. A personal rule I live by is the ‘one in, one out policy’. If you’re not already, get acquainted with combing your cashmere, handwashing your silks and balming your bags — because if you care for all the pieces in your wardrobe well, not only can you wear them longer, but when you do add a new and valued piece to your wardrobe you’ll be able to sell or submit an item to a circular programme (like our Buyback Initiative), for someone else to love. One in, one out.

Each Yu Mei bag is designed with product longevity in mind, and we have an excellent offering on hand of smart clutches, crossbody bags and small leather goods that perform double duty as everyday companions well beyond the party season. In classic Black nappa, these options will transcend trends and seasons.

From black tie to BBQs, you'll find something for every occasion. Shop our edit here.
